The Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, has announced a new system for the listing of legal cases, set to begin on December 1. The aim is to create a more efficient process by automatically listing fresh cases, eliminating the need for litigants to mention cases before the bench.

Under the new procedures, cases involving the liberty of individuals will be prioritized and listed within two working days, provided urgent interim orders are sought and defects are addressed. For urgent matters, such as anticipatory bail or death penalty cases, requests can now be made between 10:00 and 10:30 a.m.

Additionally, the circular specifies that no senior counsel will be allowed to mention cases orally, a task now reserved for young junior counsel. Requests for adjournment of old regular hearing matters will also not be entertained, aiming to reduce backlog and expedite case closures.
