Nicaragua's Political Détente: The Release of Political Prisoners

Around 40 political prisoners were released by Nicaraguan authorities, but they remain under house arrest. This follows a history of political crackdowns in the country. Among those released is activist Jose Alejandro Hurtado. Nicaragua previously released over 200 political prisoners in 2023.

Nicaragua's Political Détente: The Release of Political Prisoners

Nicaraguan authorities took a significant step in reducing political tensions by releasing approximately 40 political prisoners on Saturday, according to activist sources in the country. This group will remain under house arrest and must report regularly to the authorities.

Among those released is Jose Alejandro Hurtado, an activist whose detention in January was documented by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. The sudden release has left many family members elated yet anxious, as some hadn't seen their relatives for extended periods.

This development comes against a backdrop of international criticism directed at Nicaragua's government, led by Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, particularly concerning human rights and political crackdowns. In a similar gesture earlier this year, the country freed more than 200 political prisoners, who were transported to the U.S., signaling potential shifts in Nicaragua's political landscape.
