Indictment Unveiled: Former Credit Suisse Employee in Mozambique Money Laundering Scandal
Switzerland's federal prosecutor has indicted a former Credit Suisse employee on charges of money laundering linked to loans associated with the Mozambique tuna bond scandal. The indictment accuses Credit Suisse and its successors of organizational failures, leading to the misuse of funds intended for Mozambique's tuna industry.
Switzerland's federal prosecutor has filed charges against a former Credit Suisse employee for allegedly laundering money connected to loans given in Mozambique.
The prosecutor's office also accuses Credit Suisse, its parent company, and its successors like UBS Group SA of failing to prevent the crime due to organizational shortcomings. UBS, which acquired Credit Suisse in 2023, denies these allegations, which date back to events in 2016 involving loans of over $2 billion to Mozambican state entities.
The funds, meant to bolster Mozambique's tuna industry, were misappropriated for maritime security efforts, with significant sums unaccounted for, igniting the infamous tuna bond scandal and causing financial upheaval in Mozambique in 2016 when the scandal broke.
