Haiti's Gang Turf War: A Battle for Control Amid Chaos
A violent clash in Haiti's capital has left dozens dead, including children, as rival gang factions battle for control. The unrest challenges a coalition that previously reduced violence. Concerns grow for civilian safety and access to essentials amid fears of escalating conflict and political instability ahead of upcoming elections.
In a brutal clash in the heart of Haiti's capital, a powerful gang coalition has fractured, leading to the deaths of dozens, including 10 children. The skirmish marks a devastating setback for the Viv Ansanm coalition, which had recently quelled violence in the area.
Dede, a prominent figure among the Bel-Air factions, was beheaded, while another influential leader, Kempes Sanon, suffered injuries. Sanon's status in the gang hierarchy was overthrown while he sought medical treatment, raising concerns about escalating violence in a city overwhelmingly controlled by organized crime.
Reports indicate that 49 people, including innocent civilians and recruited minors, have perished. As the gunfire continues, Haiti braces for further destabilization, with fears of exacerbated humanitarian crises and political turmoil looming ahead of upcoming elections.
