In a high-profile case, Naijil Paul, a nurse from Kerala, has been sentenced to seven years and nine months' imprisonment in Scotland. Paul was found guilty of raping a vulnerable colleague and sexually assaulting two other women at a care home while serving as the manager.
Paul's offences were brought to light after charges were filed in 2018. He fled to Kochi ahead of his anticipated trial in December 2019. Following his extradition from India, he pleaded guilty in October and received his sentence at the High Court in Glasgow.
Despite pleading guilty, Paul's actions in the courtroom were marked by significant victim-blaming. Judge Renucci voiced concerns over Paul's version of events and his level of risk, leading to a sentence reduction from eight years. Paul will be under supervision for two additional years post-release and is banned from contacting his victims.
