In a significant legislative move, the Karnataka government has tabled a bill in the Assembly aimed at eradicating the practice of social boycotts, an entrenched social evil often perpetrated by caste panchayats. The 'Karnataka Social Boycott (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Bill, 2025' seeks to criminalize such boycotts, proposing a three-year jail term and fines up to Rs 1 lakh for violators.
The bill outlines 20 forms of social boycotts, including denial of business, access to services, and participation in community events. It highlights the unconstitutional nature of these practices and their adverse effects on societal harmony, prompting the government to enact this legislation.
Additionally, the bill mandates the appointment of a Social Boycott Prohibition Officer to oversee enforcement. This comes alongside another legislative proposal to amend the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, aiming to enhance bureaucratic oversight and include key legislative members in the Greater Bengaluru Authority.
