For the first time, a woman in Assam has received Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), according to a senior advocate. This marks a significant milestone, increasing the number of people granted citizenship under the Act in Assam to four.
The 40-year-old woman, originally from Bangladesh, entered India in 2007 and has since resided in Sribhumi. After applying for citizenship following the CAA notification last year, her initial application was rejected due to jurisdictional uncertainties. However, a reapplication led to her successful registration as a citizen.
The Act, passed in 2019, has been contentious, with protests in Assam resulting in violent clashes. The CAA allows non-Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan who arrived before the end of 2014 to seek Indian citizenship.
