The Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, recently highlighted the role of technology in enhancing, not replacing, human judgment within the legal system. Addressing a symposium focused on justice for the common man, he discussed strategies to reduce litigation costs and delays.
Justice Kant remarked that although technology proved invaluable during the COVID pandemic, it should not overshadow human judgment. He cautioned against an over-reliance on digital tools, stating, "in an age of deep fakes and digital arrests, courts cannot afford naive optimism."
He pinpointed high litigation costs and lengthy case resolutions as key barriers to justice. Emphasizing alternatives like mediation, Justice Kant called for a cultural shift towards settlements. He also stressed the need for robust judicial infrastructure to effectively dispense justice.
