In a significant development, the Supreme Court has shifted the R.G. Kar Medical College trainee doctor rape and murder case to the Calcutta High Court for ongoing oversight. This move aims to ensure thorough implementation of judicial orders in a case that has shaken the nation.
Chaired by Justices M.M. Sundresh and Satish Chandra Sharma, the Supreme Court directed that the case documents be sent to the high court. Despite Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, already receiving a life sentence, the apex court remains focused on ancillary issues, including the safety of medical professionals.
Senior advocate Karuna Nundy, representing medical professionals, highlighted the National Task Force's stance that state laws are adequate for protecting healthcare workers, suggesting a separate central law isn't necessary. As the case continues under judicial scrutiny in West Bengal, the need for reforms in the healthcare sector takes center stage.
