The formation of the Bureau of Port Security, a statutory body aimed at safeguarding vessels and port infrastructures, has been greenlighted by the government. This move comes as part of concerted efforts to bolster maritime security, with particular emphasis on cybersecurity concerns, officials shared on Friday.

The decision followed a high-level meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Attended by key figures such as Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and Ram Mohan Naidu, Minister of Civil Aviation, the meeting highlighted the urgent need for a dedicated port security body.

The Bureau of Port Security will mirror the model of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, functioning under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. It will be steered by a Director General, specifically an IPS officer, underscoring the bureau's critical role in overseeing and regulating maritime security amid rising challenges.
