The Government is investing $250,000 to upgrade the Whakarewarewa Forest Loop Great Ride in Rotorua, a move aimed at boosting regional tourism while delivering a safer and more enjoyable experience for cyclists.
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston announced the funding today, describing the project as an investment in both visitor experience and long-term tourism growth.
“I’m thrilled to be investing in the future of this popular cycle trail and contributing to a safe and scenic experience for locals and tourists,” Upston said.
The upgrade will significantly improve rider safety by rerouting sections of the trail through the forest, moving it away from the concrete pathway that currently runs alongside the busy State Highway 5. The project will also extend the trail by approximately six kilometres, enhancing the overall riding experience.
The Whakarewarewa Forest Loop is New Zealand’s newest Great Ride and forms part of Rotorua’s iconic Whakarewarewa Forest—also known as the Redwoods—which features more than 200 kilometres of purpose-built trails catering to riders of all skill levels.
“Visiting our newest Great Ride is a wonderful way to take in the sights and scenery of Rotorua’s iconic forest,” Upston said. “It’s a world-class cycling experience.”
The investment is one of several cycle trail infrastructure projects funded under the Government’s $70 million Major Events and Tourism Package, designed to strengthen regional tourism assets and attract more domestic and international visitors.
“Upgrading our tourism infrastructure improves the overall visitor experience and helps secure the future of tourism in the regions,” Upston said.
The improvements are expected to draw more visitors to Rotorua, supporting local businesses, jobs, and the regional economy.
“This is a win for tourism, a win for safety, and a win for everyone who loves to ride,” she said.
