Delhi Overhauls Ration Card System: 4.20 Lakh Cards Cancelled
Delhi government has cancelled 4.20 lakh ration cards over ten years to enhance the public distribution system. Cancellations occurred due to ineligibilities, deaths, and transfers. The system now includes Aadhaar verification and processes pending applications on a first-come basis. E-KYC and field verification were introduced following irregularities.

In a significant move to bolster the public distribution system, the Delhi government has annulled 4.20 lakh ration cards over the last decade, officials reported. The cancellations, from January 2015 to December 2025, were primarily due to ineligibility, such as vehicle ownership or government employment.
During the recent winter session, it was clarified that removals also occurred because of beneficiaries' deaths or relocations. The Food Supply and Consumer Affairs department stressed using the Aadhaar database to prevent fake card issuances, addressing concerns raised by BJP MLA Harish Khurana.
Moreover, pending ration card applications are being handled on a 'first in, first out' basis, with the department only issuing new cards if vacancies arise. In 2025, the introduction of e-KYC and field verification followed reports of serious irregularities, marking a more stringent verification process underway.
