The United States has imposed fresh sanctions on Iranian officials accused of suppressing nationwide protests against Iran's theocratic regime. Among those sanctioned is the secretary of the Supreme Council for National Security, identified by the US Treasury as an advocate for violence against demonstrators.
The Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control has also sanctioned 18 individuals and companies linked to money laundering from Iranian oil sales via a shadow banking network. This network includes sanctioned Iranian banks like Bank Melli and Shahr Bank, which operate outside traditional financial regulations.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reinforced America's support for Iranian citizens in their quest for freedom and justice, stating that the Treasury will leverage all available tools against those responsible for human rights abuses. Despite being largely symbolic, these sanctions prevent access to US assets and business opportunities.
