In a significant display of public dissent, residents of Murshidabad, West Bengal, took to blocking National Highway 12 on Friday. The action was a form of protest against alleged attacks on migrant workers from their district in other states, leading to considerable traffic disruptions.
The protesters expressed their anguish over incidents where migrants were allegedly targeted for speaking Bengali and mistakenly identified as Bangladeshis. This outcry was further fueled by the recent death of a Murshidabad native who had moved to Jharkhand for employment.
Despite engagement from senior police officers, who attempted to negotiate the road's reopening, the protesters remained steadfast in their demands. They insist on a visit from top administrative officials and concrete assurances of safety and justice for their fellow migrants.
