As tensions rise between Washington and Tehran, India is reassessing its role in the strategically important Chabahar port project in Iran. The Trump administration's recent threat of a 25 percent additional tariff on countries engaging with Tehran complicates India's partnership.
The port, crucial for connectivity and trade, is currently under Indian development. However, amidst US tariffs and Iran's internal unrest, India is pondering alternatives, including forming a new entity to continue the project without direct government exposure.
Despite US sanctions shipping India an exemption until April 2026, New Delhi is closely watching the situation, urging nationals in Iran to leave and advising against travel amid the ongoing turmoil and US military warnings toward Iran.
