Koraput Celebrates 'Naxal-Free' Status After Maoist Surrender

Odisha's Koraput district is now 'naxal-free' following the surrender of a key CPI (Maoist) member. Mamata Podiami, carrying a Rs 5.5 lakh bounty, laid down arms and will receive financial aid and benefits. Officials urge remaining Maoists to reintegrate and embrace peaceful lives.

Koraput district in Odisha has been declared 'naxal-free' after Mamata Podiami, an area committee member of the banned CPI (Maoist), surrendered to the authorities. Identified also as Mamita and Soni, Podiami carried a bounty of Rs 5.5 lakh.

She surrendered with an SLR rifle and is entitled to financial assistance equivalent to her bounty, alongside an additional Rs 1.65 lakh for her weapon. She will also benefit from the state's rehabilitation policies, according to DIG Kanwar Vishal Singh. The authorities urge other Maoist cadres to integrate with society for a dignified life.

Koraput once faced severe Maoist activity, including a major 2009 attack. Now, as the fourth district in the south-western police range to achieve 'naxal-free' status, it sees a positive change in law and order, attracting tourists nationwide.
