Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston has highlighted the significant economic role of New Zealand’s hospitality sector while addressing industry leaders at the 2026 Hospitality Summit.

Speaking at the event, Upston emphasised the industry’s importance to both the national economy and the country’s tourism experience.

“Hospitality is a huge contributor to our economy and workforce, helping drive over $9 billion in GDP and employing people across the country,” Upston said.

Hospitality’s Role in Tourism and Visitor Experience

According to the minister, hospitality businesses play a critical role in shaping how international and domestic visitors experience New Zealand.

“Our hospitality businesses shape how visitors experience New Zealand and what they remember long after they leave,” she said.

Restaurants, cafés, bars, hotels, and other hospitality services are often among the most direct ways visitors engage with local culture and communities, making the sector a key pillar of the country’s tourism industry.

Progress Since the First Hospitality Summit

Upston noted that since the first Hospitality Summit held in 2024, the government has worked closely with industry stakeholders to address key challenges and support sector growth.

Several initiatives have been introduced in response to industry feedback, including:

  • Bringing the Michelin Guide to New Zealand

  • Investing in regional tourism promotion

  • Supporting major events across the country

  • Launching the Hospitality Sector Review to assess regulatory settings

These initiatives are intended to strengthen the industry’s competitiveness while supporting sustainable growth.

Collaboration Between Government and Industry

The 2026 Summit provided an opportunity for government representatives and hospitality leaders to review progress made since the inaugural meeting and discuss future priorities.

Upston said the event helped identify practical steps to support a stronger and more resilient hospitality sector.

“This year’s Summit was a chance for industry and government to reflect on progress to date and focus on practical next steps that support a strong, resilient hospitality sector,” she said.

The minister emphasised that cooperation between the public and private sectors is key to strengthening economic growth.

“The progress made demonstrates the positive impacts on economic growth when business and government work together on fixing the basics and building the future.”

Recognising Industry Organisations

Upston also acknowledged the ongoing work of key industry bodies, including Hospitality New Zealand and the Restaurant Association, as well as the thousands of hospitality businesses operating across the country.

“I want to acknowledge the continued work of Hospitality New Zealand, the Restaurant Association and hospitality businesses across the country,” she said.

The minister added that she looks forward to continued discussions with the sector to explore new opportunities and ideas that can support the industry’s long-term success.
