The French navy has taken decisive action by intercepting and boarding the tanker Deyna in the Mediterranean Sea. French President Emmanuel Macron identified the vessel as part of Russia's sanctioned 'shadow fleet,' accused of shipping oil in violation of international sanctions imposed due to Russia's ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
The operation, coordinated with allies including the United Kingdom, sought to ascertain the true nationality of the tanker. Initially flying a Mozambique flag, the Deyna's documents revealed irregularities, prompting its diversion and further inspection at an anchorage point. The matter has now been handed over to a prosecutor in Marseille.
In response, Macron condemned the practice of using such vessels for evading sanctions, labeling them as war profiteers aiding Russia's war efforts. France, along with international cooperation, remains committed to curbing these unlawful maritime activities.
