In a robust demonstration of unity, several opposition MPs, spearheaded by the Congress, gathered at the Parliament House complex to protest the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. The lawmakers displayed a large banner urging the government to "Stop Targeting NGOs and Institutions," and called for the immediate withdrawal of the controversial Bill.
The protest witnessed participation from various parties, including Congress MPs, members of the Samajwadi Party, IUML, NCP(SP), and the RSP. The opposing forces accused the government of attempting to push through what they alleged to be an unconstitutional and draconian piece of legislation.
Union Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai, introduced the Bill in the Lok Sabha, underscoring its purpose to bolster transparency and ensure the proper utilization of foreign funds. Meanwhile, Union minister Kiren Rijiju refuted the claim that the legislation specifically targets religious organizations, asserting that its intent is solely to protect national security and interests.
