Ahead of a highly anticipated derby match on Friday, tragedy unfolded at the Alejandro Villanueva Stadium, also known as Matute, in Lima when at least one person was killed and several were injured. The incident has cast a shadow over the upcoming face-off between Alianza Lima and Universitario.
Expressing deep condolences for the victims, Alianza Lima confirmed that the incident resulted in at least one fatality and numerous injuries during a 'flag-waving event' at the venue. The cause of the incident remains undetermined, with Alianza Lima emphasizing its commitment to transparency and cooperation with authorities to uncover the facts.
Both the club and fire officials, including Fire Officer Marco Pajuelo, insisted that there were no structural failures contributing to the tragedy, and initial inspections reported no debris or fallen objects. Despite the somber circumstances, the Peruvian Professional Soccer League confirmed that Saturday's match will proceed as scheduled, with assurances of continued efforts to ensure safety in and around the stadium.
