The Rajasthan High Court on Wednesday extended the interim bail granted to self-styled godman Asaram, who is serving life sentence in two sexual assault cases, till May 25 on medical grounds. The order was passed by a division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma and Justice Sangeeta Sharma. The counsel for Asaram submitted that the 86-year-old was still undergoing treatment and had not fully recovered, urging the court to extend his bail. Taking note of Asaram's medical condition, the bench allowed the plea and extended the interim bail period till May 25. The high court had granted interim bail to Asaram on October 29, 2025, for six months. With the relief set to expire on April 29, his lawyers moved the court a day prior seeking an extension, citing his ''deteriorating'' health condition. The Rajasthan High Court's October order granting Asaram interim bail was followed by a similar six-month interim relief provided by the Gujarat High Court on November 6, 2025. On December 8, the Supreme Court dismissed a plea seeking cancellation of his bail and directed the Rajasthan High Court to decide the pending appeal within three months. On April 15, Asaram had moved an application seeking an urgent hearing for bail extension on medical grounds, which the court had declined. Arguments on his appeal for suspension of sentence were concluded by his counsel on April 17, while the victim's side completed its submissions on April 20, after which the matter was reserved for judgment. In January 2023, a court in Gujarat's Gandhinagar had sentenced Asaram to life imprisonment for raping a woman disciple, who hailed from Surat, multiple times from 2001 to 2006 when she was living at his ashram at Motera near Ahmedabad. The self-styled godman is also serving a life sentence in another case of raping a minor girl at his ashram in Rajasthan in 2013.
