In a major push to strengthen India's vocational training ecosystem, the Directorate General of Training (DGT) under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has officially announced the admission schedule for the Craft Instructor Training Scheme (CITS) for the 2026–27 academic session.

The programme, a cornerstone of India's skill development framework, aims to create a new generation of highly trained instructors capable of delivering industry-relevant skills across Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) nationwide.

Online Applications Open Till May 10

Eligible candidates can now apply online through the official portal — www.nimionlineadmission.in — with the deadline set for 10 May 2026.

Applicants must possess one of the following qualifications:

  • National Trade Certificate (NTC)

  • National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC)

  • Diploma or Degree in relevant fields

Candidates appearing in their final qualifying examinations are also eligible to apply, widening access for aspiring instructors.

National-Level Entrance Test on May 31

Admissions will be conducted through the All India Common Entrance Test (AICET) 2026, scheduled for 31 May 2026.

The exam will be held in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode across multiple centres nationwide, ensuring transparency, efficiency, and accessibility for candidates from all regions.

Training Across 42 Trades Nationwide

Selected candidates will undergo one-year intensive training across 42 trades, including:

  • 29 engineering trades

  • 13 non-engineering trades

Training will be delivered through a network of National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) and Institutes for Training of Trainers (IToTs) across India.

The programme focuses not only on technical expertise but also on modern teaching methodologies, ensuring that graduates are equipped to effectively transfer practical skills to trainees.

Mandatory Certification for ITI Trainers

The National Council for Vocational Education & Training (NCVET) has emphasised that CITS certification is essential for trainers in ITIs, reinforcing the programme's importance in maintaining quality standards in vocational education.

Upon successful completion, trainees will be awarded the National Craft Instructor Certificate (NCIC), a nationally recognised credential that enhances employability and career prospects in the training and education sector.

Key Reforms: Lower Fees and Revised Age Criteria

In a move aimed at increasing accessibility and participation, the government has introduced key changes for the 2026–27 session:

  • Minimum age increased from 16 to 18 years, aligning with professional training standards

  • No upper age limit, encouraging lifelong learning and career transitions

  • Reduced examination fees:

    • General category: ₹500 → ₹300

    • SC/ST/PH/EWS/Women: ₹300 → ₹200

These reforms are expected to attract a broader pool of candidates, particularly from underrepresented and economically weaker sections.

Building India's Skilled Workforce

The CITS programme plays a critical role in India's skill development mission by ensuring a steady pipeline of qualified instructors who can train future generations of skilled workers.

With industries increasingly demanding job-ready talent, the emphasis on high-quality instructor training is seen as essential to bridging the skill gap and boosting productivity.

By combining technical proficiency with teaching excellence, the initiative supports the government's vision of creating a globally competitive workforce and strengthening the country's vocational education system.
