Crackdown in Punjab: Arrests Over Anti-State Social Media Activity
Thirteen individuals have been arrested in Punjab, Pakistan, due to their involvement in 'anti-state' social media activities. This includes people associated with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency claims these activities targeted state institutions, leading to their arrest under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act.
In a significant crackdown, thirteen individuals have been apprehended in Pakistan's Punjab province for allegedly engaging in anti-state activities on social media platforms. This move, announced by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), has brought into focus the intense scrutiny of digital activities in the region.
The arrested group reportedly includes affiliates of the former prime minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, accused of orchestrating a campaign against the Pakistan Army and the incumbent Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government. The crackdown aims to curb negative content purportedly damaging public sentiment and state order.
According to NCCIA Punjab Director Muhammad Ali Waseem, the suspects have been charged under provisions of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA). The agency alleges these social media activities were part of an organized campaign, largely driven by dissidents frustrated with the governing system.
