A 55-year-old man posing as a healer allegedly raped a 13-year-old tribal girl in Maharashtra's Palghar district, according to police. The accused was arrested after the attack in a forest area, where he had taken the victim under the pretext of acquiring a medicinal plant for her treatment.
The incident, which happened early Monday, came to light after the victim's elder sister filed a complaint. The suspect, known for providing herbal treatments, was familiar to the victim's family, increasing the level of trust. He lured the victim into the forest while others waited in the vehicle, leading to the horrific assault.
Police have filed charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the POCSO Act, and the Maharashtra Prevention of Witchcraft Act. Legislative Council Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe directed swift and stringent action. The victim and her family are to receive support under the state’s 'Manodhairya' scheme.
