Maharashtra Expands E-Lock System for Liquor Transport

The Maharashtra government is set to broaden the use of e-lock systems for transporting molasses, alcohol, and liquor to enhance surveillance and regulatory compliance. Starting June 2026, the initiative's second phase mandates digital locks on vehicles transporting these goods, aiming to prevent pilferage and ensure smooth monitoring.

The Maharashtra government is intensifying its efforts to monitor the transport of excisable goods by extending the mandatory use of e-lock systems to a broader range of categories. A Government Resolution issued by the State Home Department on Tuesday expands the technology-enabled tracking mechanism, aiming for tighter control over liquor transportation.

In this second phase, effective from June 1, 2026, vehicles carrying molasses, alcohol, or liquor through Maharashtra, including inter-state and export-import consignments, must use digital locks. This initiative includes consignments entering the state under transport permits and those moving imported liquor to licensed premises within Maharashtra.

The mandate targets curbing pilferage, promoting regulatory compliance, and strengthening oversight. The resolution requires all covered vehicles to install tamper-proof locks conforming to specified technical standards, with coordination among excise authorities to ensure effective enforcement.
