EU Investigation: Scrutinizing Babis' Agrofert Financial Ties
The European Commission is probing potential conflicts of interest related to EU subsidies granted to companies linked to Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis. The scrutiny, focusing on Babis' conglomerate Agrofert, involves examining the trust arrangement holding his shares. Any EU funding refusal would impact the Czech state budget.
The European Commission has launched an investigation into potential conflicts of interest involving EU subsidies enjoyed by companies in the business empire of Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis. On Tuesday, a spokesperson confirmed that the Commission had requested information from the Czech government on measures in place to prevent conflicts tied to Babis' conglomerate Agrofert.
As first reported by Czech Radio's iRozhlas.cz and Seznam Zpravy, the Commission seeks a legal analysis of the transfer of Babis' shares into a trust. They also demand assurances concerning funds received by firms associated with Babis that remain outside this trust. A letter addressing these concerns was sent on May 20, according to the Commission.
If subsidies are found ineligible, the Czech state may need to cover the costs. Agrofert, comprising 230 Central European companies in multiple sectors, has received significant EU subsidies over the years. The ongoing inquiry reflects the need to protect EU financial interests, with several matters still requiring clarification as stated by Commission deputy director-general Hugo Sobral.
