Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday virtually inaugurated a new 220-bedded Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Hospital in Surat as part of a larger development package worth ₹18,800 crore unveiled for Gujarat. The new healthcare facility is expected to significantly improve access to quality medical services for workers and their families covered under the Employees' State Insurance scheme.

The inauguration was conducted virtually from Surat Indoor Stadium, where the Prime Minister launched multiple infrastructure and development projects. At the same time, a separate event was held at the hospital premises, attended by ESIC Director General, senior government officials, employers, employees and members of the public who watched the live telecast of the Prime Minister's address.

The event also recognized the contribution of construction workers involved in building the hospital. Several workers were felicitated, while ESI beneficiaries received cash benefits directly, highlighting the government's focus on worker welfare and social security.

Modern Healthcare Facility Built at a Cost of ₹216 Crore

Spread across an 8.60-acre campus, the hospital has been constructed at a cost of ₹216 crore. The facility is expected to benefit around 3.20 lakh insured workers and nearly 12.16 lakh beneficiaries in the region, including family members covered under the ESI scheme. Located about 20 minutes from Surat Railway Station, the hospital has been designed to provide a wide range of specialized healthcare services under one roof. Departments include General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Oncology, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) care, and Dental services.

The hospital is also equipped with advanced diagnostic facilities, including Radiology and Pathology departments. A 24-hour emergency service will ensure immediate medical attention for patients requiring urgent care. Officials believe the facility will reduce the burden on existing healthcare institutions in the region while providing insured workers with easier access to quality treatment closer to their homes and workplaces.

Strengthening Social Security for Gujarat's Workforce

The inauguration adds another important link to Gujarat's expanding ESI healthcare network. The Employees' State Insurance Scheme began operations in the state in October 1964 and has grown steadily over the decades. Today, the scheme covers approximately 20.04 lakh insured persons across 34 districts in Gujarat. The Surat Sub-Regional Office plays a crucial role in delivering services to workers in Surat, Navsari and Valsad, regions that are home to large industrial and manufacturing hubs.

With the addition of the new ESIC Hospital, workers in South Gujarat are expected to receive faster access to specialized treatment and improved healthcare services without having to travel long distances. The project reflects the government's continuing efforts to strengthen social security infrastructure for the organised workforce while ensuring that healthcare remains accessible, affordable and comprehensive for millions of workers and their families.
