Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami on Thursday directed all the district collectors in the state to undertake a field study every month on the effective implementation of government schemes and welfare measures and send him a report. Palaniswami, addressing a meet of collectors here at the Secretariat said government's schemes will properly reach the people if they functioned as the "eyes" of the government.

He described the district administrative units as the face of the government at the regional level. Listing out a slew of schemes including the Kudimaramathu (cleaning up and desilting water bodies) and Rain Water Harvesting, the Chief Minister's Solar Powered Green House Scheme, Old Age Pension Scheme, Amma Two Wheeler Scheme, he said such initiatives needed to be monitored at the ground level on a monthly basis.

Also, he referred to agriculture related schemes, enrolment of students in schools and amenities in residential areas of Scheduled Castes and Tribes that should be scrutinised. He appealed to the collectors to actively work in the field so that people realised that "Amma's government is people's government and one which protected the interests of the poor and common people." Tasking them to send a report to his office every month on implementation of the schemes, he said he will chair a meet of collectors every four months..
