Jammu and Kashmir Police's crime branch sleuths raided the house of a cashier of the public health engineering (PHE) department on Friday and seized documents in connection with financial misappropriation. The crime branch has registered a case against Nikhil Gandral for alleged misappropriation of government revenue in the PHE department to the tune of Rs 1.64 crore while being posted as cashier at the department's Jammu city division.

The searches were conducted under order of court and in the presence of an executive magistrate, officials said. A complaint was lodged by Surinder Abrol, executive engineer PHE, for registration of FIR against Gandral posted as cashier in his office for alleged embezzlement of government revenue amounting to Rs 1.64 crore, they said.

During investigation it has been found that the revenue collected by field staff was handed over to Gandral, but it was not deposited in the treasury, crime branch officials said, adding further investigation is underway.
