All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will address a public meeting in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur on June 12, months ahead of the Assembly polls in the BJP-ruled state, a party leader said on Wednesday.

MP Congress Committee (MPCC) vice-president Chandraprabhash Shekhar told reporters she will arrive in Jabalpur at around 10.30 am on Monday and travel to Gwari Ghat from the airport to offer prayers to 'Maa Narmada'.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will later reach Shaheed Smarak, where she will address a gathering before leaving for New Delhi, he said.

The Opposition party is gearing up to face the year-end Assembly polls where it will seek to return to power after losing office midway in March 2020 following a rebellion by a section of MLAs. The Congress had emerged as the single largest party after the 2018 Assembly polls but its government led by Kamal Nath collapsed 15 months later following a rebellion by Jyotiraditya Scindia, now a Union minister, and more than 20 MLAs loyal to him.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) then returned to power.

In the last polls, the Congress won 114 seats in the 230-member Assembly, while the BJP got 109. The BJP's seat tally rose to 127, while that of the Congress reduced to 93 after bypolls were held in nearly two dozen constituencies following resignations by sitting MLAs. The BJP has been in power in the state since 2003 except between December 2018 and March 2020.
