A bill to extend U.S. government funding and avert a shutdown garnered enough votes to pass the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday, with voting still underway.

Passage would send the short-term legislation onto the Democratic-led Senate.

To avert a shutdown, the Senate and Republican-controlled House must enact legislation that President Joe Biden can sign into law before current funding for federal agencies expires at midnight on Friday.
