Notably, Nikhil Kumaraswamy, in his first election, was defeated in Mandya by independent candidate Sumalatha Ambareesh in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Nikhil said that since the initial days of this alliance, he has been personally involved in every meeting that took place in Delhi, along with his father and former Karnataka CM (HD Kumaraswamy), Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP chief JP Nadda.

"We have spoken about the alliance, and both BJP and JD (S) cadres expect this to be a healthy alliance so that it can fetch some good results. Considering it to be a national election, we are not expecting a high number of seats because we are a regional party," said Nikhil. In 2019, the BJP won 25 seats with a vote share of 51.7 per cent.
