Sikkim Awaits Counting Day: SKM vs. SDF in High-Stakes Assembly Poll

The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) is eyeing a second consecutive term in office as the votes in 32 assembly constituencies are set to be counted on Sunday. The opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) hopes to reclaim power in this high-stakes election battle. Votes will be counted at six locations in different districts under tight security arrangements starting at 6 am.

Apart from SKM and SDF, nominees from BJP, Congress, and Citizen Action Party-Sikkim (CAP-S) are also in contention. Votes will be tallied in Gangtok, Namchi, Pakyong, Soreng, Gyalshing, and Mangan districts. Officials have reported that an estimated 80% of the 4.64 lakh voters participated in the election.

Notable candidates include Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and his wife Krishna Kumari Rai, former Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, and ex-Indian footballer Bhaichung Bhutia. Intense multi-cornered contests are expected, with the SKM and SDF contesting all 32 seats and BJP, CAP-S, and Congress participating robustly. In the previous elections, SKM narrowly ended the SDF's 25-year rule. The SDF seeks to bounce back, promising a nail-biting finish.
