The South Korean Defence Ministry did not specify the number of balloons detected, advising the public to report suspicious objects to authorities.

Text alerts from Seoul’s city government warned of unidentified objects in the skies, believed to be from the North. The military has deployed chemical and explosive clearance teams to handle the 260 balloons found in various parts of South Korea. These balloons carried trash and manure, but no hazardous materials were detected.

Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, confirmed that the balloon launches were in retaliation against South Korean activists. She hinted that this could become a standard response to future leafleting campaigns. Historically, North Korea has taken aggressive steps against such activities, including demolishing a liaison office and making disputed health claims about balloon-borne infections.
