In a tightly contested election, BJP's Tamluk constituency candidate Abhijit Gangopadhyay is leading his closest rival, Trinamool Congress' Debangshu Bhattacharya, by a significant margin of 59,570 votes, according to the Election Commission.

Gangopadhyay, who joined the BJP after a stint as a Calcutta High Court judge, is well-known for his impactful rulings on education-related issues in West Bengal. His judicial orders have often directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate alleged irregularities in the recruitment processes for teaching and non-teaching staff in state-run and aided schools.

While his directives earned widespread acclaim, particularly from aspiring school job candidates, they also faced backlash from some leaders of the state's ruling party. The election in Tamluk, which encompasses Nandigram — a significant site in the anti-land acquisition movement of 2007 — is crucial for both TMC and BJP. This region was pivotal in the rise of Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress to power in 2011. Currently, an election petition by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee challenging Suvendu Adhikari's victory from Nandigram in the 2021 assembly elections is still pending before the Calcutta High Court.
