The minority community has played a pivotal role in shaping the election outcomes in West Bengal, particularly in the Muslim-majority pockets of the southern region. Their consolidated support helped the Trinamool Congress (TMC) sweep these areas, while a division in votes facilitated BJP victories in the northern parts of the state, where the minority electorate could not consolidate its influence.
In the recent elections, the state witnessed significant dynamics with around 30 percent of the electorate from minority communities. This group’s influence extends to 16-18 Lok Sabha seats, making them a coveted voting bloc for all political parties. The BJP managed to retain seats like Balurghat, Raiganj, and Malda North, primarily due to the fractured minority votes between the Left-Congress alliance and the TMC.
While the Left-Congress combine candidates were more competitive, in Raiganj for instance, they could not prevent the BJP’s Kartik Chandra Paul from winning by a margin of 68,197 votes. The TMC’s significant victories in south Bengal highlight the strategic importance of the minority vote, as exemplified by their winning back the Cooch Behar seat from the BJP and the prized Baharampur Lok Sabha seat from a long-standing Congress incumbent.
