Nearly 90 countries and organisations have confirmed attendance at the Swiss-hosted Ukraine peace summit this weekend despite Russia's non-participation, Switzerland's president announced Monday.
President Viola Amherd stated that the summit aims to map out a possible peace plan, 28 months after Russian forces invaded Ukraine.
'This is not propaganda,' Amherd emphasized. 'This is about the basis of humanitarian aid provided by Switzerland and initiating a dialogue.' Half of the participants will be represented at the head of state or government level, including leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
While approximately 160 invitations were sent, fewer than 100 have RSVP'd for the first phase of the peace process. Key developing nations such as Turkey, South Africa, and Brazil have yet to confirm their attendance.
Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis noted that peace cannot be achieved without Russia's involvement, stressing continued diplomatic efforts with Moscow. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to attend, with the summit focused on lasting peace, humanitarian aid, and nuclear security.
Around 4,000 military personnel will secure the event, with increased cyberattack threats noted ahead of the summit.
