South Korea has resumed loudspeaker broadcasts along its border with North Korea in retaliation for the North's balloon propaganda campaign. South Korea's military has detected signs that North Korea is installing loudspeakers along their heavily armed border. This comes a day after South Korea resumed anti-Pyongyang propaganda broadcasts, marking the first time in years the two rivals have engaged in Cold War-style psychological warfare.

South Korea's loudspeaker broadcasts on Sunday were a direct response to North Korea's recent balloon campaign, which involved sending over 1,000 balloons filled with trash and manure over the border. North Korea's campaign was in turn a retaliation against South Korean civilian groups using balloons to fly anti-North Korean propaganda leaflets.

The psychological warfare has exacerbated tensions between the two Koreas, particularly as diplomatic talks concerning North Korea's nuclear ambitions remain stalled. In recent nuclear planning discussions in Seoul, US and South Korean officials reviewed undisclosed guidelines for nuclear deterrence strategies and discussed strengthening joint military training.
