Secret Service Scrutiny: Protection Failures in Trump Assassination Attempt
The U.S. Secret Service is under congressional examination for failing to prevent an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle is scheduled to brief several committees and review security measures ahead of the Republican National Convention.
On Monday, the U.S. Secret Service will start fielding questions from Congress regarding the agents' failure to thwart an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. This comes as the agency ramps up protection for Trump ahead of the Republican National Convention.
Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle is set to brief the House Homeland Security Committee in a virtual meeting on Monday afternoon, according to a congressional aide. Additionally, Cheatle will brief the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday and will appear before the panel for a full hearing on July 22.
The assassination attempt has triggered significant concerns in Congress about how the shooter managed to access a rooftop in the line of sight of Trump's speaking location. President Biden has ordered an independent review, and Republican lawmakers have promised swift investigations.
In her first major statement since the incident, Cheatle announced on Monday that the agency is enhancing security for Trump and the Republican convention. "I am confident in the security plan our Secret Service RNC coordinator and our partners have put in place, which we have reviewed and strengthened in the wake of Saturday's shooting," Cheatle stated.
Trump mentioned that a bullet grazed his ear during the rally but assured he is fine. He traveled to Milwaukee on Sunday and is expected to receive his party's formal nomination later this week.
