Trump Media witnessed a significant surge in stock value, jumping over 35% on the first day of trading following an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. The incident, which occurred at a rally in Pennsylvania, saw a gunman armed with an AR-style rifle fatally shoot a spectator and injure Trump, who was struck in the right ear. The gunman was killed by the US Secret Service.
Adding to the turbulence, a federal judge in Florida dismissed the case involving Trump's classified documents, citing concerns over the special prosecutor’s appointment. This case was initially perceived as a major legal threat to Trump.
Truth Social, owned by Trump Media, has seen its stocks become highly volatile since their debut in March, joining the ranks of meme stocks. The stock has experienced wild swings, especially post Biden's debate performance and Trump's conviction in a hush money trial related to the 2016 election. Despite the volatility, the stock peaked at nearly USD 80 in late March, significantly outpacing the broader market increases represented by the S and P 500 index. However, Trump Media reported losses exceeding USD 300 million in the last quarter.
