South Korea announced on Friday that it has resumed propaganda broadcasts into North Korea to counter the North's recent balloon launches carrying trash. This marks a revival of Cold War-style tactics that have heightened tensions between the two nations.
According to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, loudspeakers began broadcasting anti-Pyongyang messages from Thursday evening through Friday morning along the border. Although the specific content was not disclosed, past broadcasts included K-pop songs, weather updates, and news about prominent South Korean companies, as well as criticism of North Korea's missile program.
The renewed broadcasts could spark a fierce response from North Korea, known for its sensitivity to external criticism. In 2015, similar actions led to artillery exchanges between the two Koreas, though no casualties occurred. This escalation comes amid ongoing balloon launches by North Korea and rising military drills, all contributing to growing animosity in the region.
