Tunisian President Kais Saied Announces Re-election Bid Amid Controversies
Tunisian President Kais Saied declared his intention to run for another presidential term in the upcoming Oct. 6 elections. His candidacy aims to continue national liberation efforts, though opposition parties accuse his government of suppressing rivals. The announcement coincided with the jailing of opposition leader Lotfi Mraihi.
Tunisian President Kais Saied announced on Friday that he will run for another presidential term in the upcoming October 6 elections.
In a video posted on the presidency's Facebook page, Saied emphasized that his candidacy is part of 'continuing the national liberation struggle.' Meanwhile, opposition parties claim his administration is exerting undue pressure on the judiciary to stifle political rivals ahead of the 2024 elections, thereby clearing his path to a second term.
The re-election bid came on the same day a court sentenced opposition leader Lotfi Mraihi to eight months in prison on charges of vote-buying. Mraihi, who leads the Republican Union Party and is one of President Saied's most vocal critics, was also banned from contesting in presidential elections for life.
Opposition groups argue that fair and credible elections are implausible unless imprisoned politicians are released and the media can operate without government restrictions. Saied, who assumed office in 2019, dissolved parliament in 2021 and has been ruling by decree since, actions the opposition has labeled a coup.
Saied defended his moves as legal and essential to combat years of rampant corruption within the political elite.
