The BJP on Sunday strongly criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her assertion that she would offer shelter to any distressed individuals fleeing from Bangladesh. Terming it an ''evil plan'' by the INDIA bloc, the BJP alleged that the move aimed at resettling illegal immigrants to influence elections.
BJP co-incharge for West Bengal Amit Malviya questioned Banerjee's jurisdiction in immigration matters, stating that such responsibilities rest solely with the Central government. Malviya emphasized that states lack any authority on immigration and citizenship issues.
Banerjee, during a Kolkata rally, justified her stance by referring to the United Nations Resolution on refugees, citing the escalating violence in Bangladesh as a humanitarian crisis. Malviya, however, sharply countered this position, accusing the INDIA bloc of a deliberate strategy to gain electoral advantages through the illegal influx.
