Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated on Wednesday that there has been no change in policy regarding a sacred Jerusalem site, following statements from a far-right cabinet minister. The controversy arose when National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir claimed Jews could now pray at the Temple Mount.

Netanyahu's office released a statement affirming the policy of maintaining the status quo, a few hours before he was scheduled to address the U.S. Congress from Washington. The Temple Mount, which holds significant religious importance for both Jews and Muslims, has long been a flashpoint in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Defence Minister Yoav Gallant criticized Ben-Gvir’s remarks, warning they could ignite regional tensions. Since the October 7 attack on Israeli territories, Ben-Gvir has been excluded from Netanyahu's war cabinet. Meanwhile, negotiations mediated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt aim to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
