In a move that could reshape regional demographics, BJP member Nishikant Dubey demanded on Thursday that portions of Jharkhand and West Bengal be declared a Union Territory. This, he argues, would mitigate the challenges posed by the escalating number of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
Addressing the issue during Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, Dubey emphasized that the Adivasi population in Jharkhand's Santhal Parganas is dwindling due to this influx. He stated, 'I demand that Malda, Murshidabad, Araria, Kishanganj, Katihar, and the Santhal Parganas region be declared as a Union Territory, and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) be implemented there.'
Dubey further alleged that Bangladeshi infiltrators are marrying tribal women to contest elections, thus skewing local political dynamics. He stressed that the issue transcends religious lines, pointing out the increase of Muslim population in the region and the inability of Jharkhand Police to act, urging for central intervention.
