Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi NVN Somu on Friday demanded a public-private partnership model for accurate weather forecasting amid extremely harsh weather conditions causing loss of lives and property damage.

Speaking during Zero Hour, the DMK party MP emphasized the need for investments in the India Metrological Department, National Disaster Management Authority, and Indian Space Research Organisation to enhance weather predictions and early warnings.

Somu suggested leveraging global private sector expertise via a PPP model, noting that private companies could use their proprietary sensors and sophisticated models to provide more accurate forecasts.

In another Zero Hour mention, BJP MP Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba urged swift progress on the national sports university’s infrastructure in Manipur, highlighting its importance for India’s sportspersons and recognizing Manipur’s contribution to sports.

Leishemba stressed the need for expedited construction to make the university fully functional, given the sanctioned funding of Rs 643.34 crore.

Ramji Lal Suman (SP) also addressed the Upper House about Agra's 300-year-old shoe industry, advocating for the abolition of manufacturing taxes and simplification of industry rules to support growth and employment in the sector.
