Days after Home Minister Amit Shah criticized the Kerala government for its disaster management in Wayanad, CPM state secretary MV Govindan labeled the remarks as politically motivated. Govindan emphasized the need for unity, dismissing Shah's criticism as unhelpful at a critical time.
Govindan further elaborated that the central government had issued an orange alert for the affected area, but the rainfall surpassed predictions leading to much more severe conditions. He pointed out that a red alert was only declared post-disaster and refuted claims of negligence in response to early warnings.
In contrast, Home Minister Shah asserted that the Kerala government should have acted more promptly upon receiving the central warnings. He emphasized the central government's commitment to supporting Kerala beyond political differences. Meanwhile, Govindan deflected BJP MP Tejasvi Surya's remark of a 'man-made disaster' and highlighted financial contributions from the CPI(M) towards relief efforts.
Health Minister Veena George confirmed 308 deaths from the July 30 landslides, while rescue operations continue. The Indian Army has facilitated recovery efforts by constructing a Bailey Bridge to reconnect isolated areas. The ongoing crisis underscores the pressing need for effective disaster management and intergovernmental coordination.
