BJP leaders on Monday welcomed proposed amendments to the Waqf Board Act, which would restrict the board's power and bring it under government control. UP Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar emphasized the need for government oversight to ensure proper functioning.
Rajbhar stated, 'There is a requirement for this bill. The Waqf Board functions according to its own rules and regulations. The government has no control over it. So, the government is bringing this bill to ensure its role.' UP minister Danish Azad Ansari also supported the move, highlighting the intended use of board properties for community development.
Despite this, opposition leaders have strongly criticized the amendments. CPI General Secretary D Raja accused the BJP-RSS of pursuing a 'sinister agenda' against the minority community, while Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Yadav and RJD's Tejashwi Yadav denounced the proposals as an attempt to polarize and sideline crucial social issues.
