In the midst of the ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh, Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien highlighted on Tuesday that West Bengal is facing its biggest challenge yet and must absorb the most pressure.
O'Brien stressed the importance of the Union government keeping Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee informed about any developments. West Bengal, which shares a border with Bangladesh, is likely to be most impacted by the crisis.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reassured Parliament that India is closely monitoring the situation and remains in continuous touch with the Indian community in Bangladesh through its diplomatic channels. He added that border forces have been instructed to stay exceptionally alert.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee appealed to state residents to maintain peace and avoid provocation, emphasizing that any decisions regarding the crisis will be adhered to as directed by the Centre. Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and subsequent move to Delhi has added another layer of complexity to the situation, with ongoing protests having already claimed over 400 lives since mid-July.
