Ukrainian Forces Clash with Russian Troops in Kursk Region Incursion

Russian authorities reported a Ukrainian incursion in Russia's Kursk region on Tuesday. The attack, involving up to 300 Ukrainian troops and various armored vehicles, was reportedly repelled by Russian forces. Independent verification of the report is lacking, and misinformation remains rampant. Prior incursions have been claimed by two obscure groups.

Russian authorities claimed that a Ukrainian force launched an incursion on Tuesday into Russia's Kursk region but was being beaten back by troops and local border guards.

The Russian Defence Ministry reported that up to 300 Ukrainian troops, supported by 11 tanks and over 20 armored combat vehicles, attacked Russian border positions near Nikolayevo-Daryino and Oleshnya in the Kursk region.

Russian officials claimed that six Ukrainian tanks, four armored personnel carriers, and six other armored vehicles were destroyed during the conflict.

However, the Russian report could not be independently verified. Disinformation and propaganda have played a central role in the war, now in its third year.

Prior incursions into Russia's Belgorod and Bryansk regions have been claimed by two obscure groups: the Russian Volunteer Corps and the Freedom of Russia Legion.

The statement from Russia indicated that the attacking Ukrainian forces were part of the army's 22nd Mechanized Brigade, yet referred to them as “fighters” rather than “soldiers”.

Contacted by The Associated Press, the 22nd Mechanized Brigade and the Freedom of Russia Legion declined to comment on the incident.

The Ukrainian General Staff and Ministry of Defense did not immediately respond to inquiries.

Alexei Smirnov, the acting governor of the Kursk region, stated that 26 Ukrainian drones were shot down in the area during the night.
